Co-Washing has become super popular over the past year or so, especially in the curly hair community. To co-wash your hair, you solely use conditioner and banish the shampoo. There are soo many pros to using this method, but there are also some common problems that you need to be aware of and of course, know how to fix them…

Problems With Co-Washing Your Hair and How To Fix Them #1

Product build is the main concern when it comes to co-washing, which you will inevitably have a lot of if you only co-wash your hair. To combat the product build up, you will need to use a clarifying shampoo to cleanse your hair properly. Don’t worry, this won’t damage your hair if done correctly and this only needs to be undertaken occasionally or when necessary to properly remove all that product build up.

Now, if you have a sensitive scalp you may find that co-washing can cause some irritation to your scalp due to the product buildup being left in your hair after washing it. So if you find that your scalp is not responding well to co-washing, you may need to clarify your hair (and scalp!) to relieve the irritation a little. Tea tree oil is ah-mazing to keep the irritation at bay whilst working to remove dirt on the scalp for a healthy finish.

If you co-wash on a regular basis you may find that your hair and roots are becoming oily, super quickly. Don’t panic though, it just takes time for your hair and scalp to adjust to strictly co-washing. Be sure to keep an eye on your scalp for any changes whilst you are beginning to co-wash. If you find that your oily hair is not important, it may be time to put co-washing to bed and get your locks back to their natural non-greasy state. You could always try switching up between co-washing every other week and using a sulphate-free shampoo to see if the oiliness improves over time, too! : )

Last but not least - over moisturising. Yup, it can be done! Too much moisture isn’t actually beneficial for your hair y’know girls?! If you co-wash too much and you are not allowing your hair to dry between your wash sessions, this can work to over moisturise your hair. If you find that your hair has become mushy and limp, it may be a good idea to balance your hair with a protein deep conditioner.

Co-washing isn’t a bad thing for you hair but it should definitely be done in moderation. Be sure to pay attention to you hair and giving it what is needs, not forgetting banishing that product build up. Find a hair care routine that works for you and say hello to happy, healthy hair! : )
