Micellar water has become the biggest beauty product of the past few years, overtaking traditional cleansers and invading makeup bags and bathroom cabinets everywhere. It was only going to be a matter of time before these dirt clearing beads of oil were worked into our hair care routines too. Micellar water shampoos have been launched this year by luxury brands Kerastase and Redken as well as drugstore brand Charles Worthington. But is micellar water shampoo really holy grail or just hype? Let's break it down.
MICELLES WHO?
The super cleansing skills of micellar water are due to the particles of oil called micelles that attract dirt and impurities. These little beads are amazing at picking up product without sapping your skin of moisture or essential oils which is perfect for sensitive or dry skin types.
WHAT'S THE HYPE?
It makes sense that a beauty buzz like micellar is being used in haircare but there's a serious hype around silicone, sulphate and paraben free hair care right now too. Micellar based products tend to be free of all of these and are a gentler way to cleanse so they don’t weigh down the hair or dry out your scalp.
WHO WILL IT WORK FOR?
It’s suggested for people with finer hair types, especially those who wash their hair everyday from going to the gym (who even are they?) or out of personal preference. Over-washing can lead to dull, dry locks but micellar formulas are gentle enough to prevent this. They’re great for dyed hair too as they won’t strip back colour meaning you’ll need less trips to the hairdresser. However if you have super thick hair then micellar might not be for you. These formulas aren’t capable of tackling a lot especially if you're particularly prone to grease or use a lot of product.
WHICH ONES ARE THE BEST ONES?
There are a few on the market now so depending on your budget and needs you can find something to work for you. If you have all the dollar then the Kérastase Aura Botanica Bain Micellaire Shampoo is great at reviving dull hair. It’s also infused with sweet orange essential oils so your locks will smell amazing too. Premium drugstore brand Charles Worthington has a great one as well. Their Everyday Gentle Micellar Shampoo is perfect for anyone with a sensitive scalp or who washes their hair everyday. Lastly and the most affordable is the Pantene Pro-V Micellar Cleanse & Nourish Shampoo which is super gentle and better for grease prone hair types.
So with all the goss on micellar shampoos down we hope you feel a lot more clued up on this latest trend. Hype or holy grail? Let us know what you think in the comments box.
