If you want to achieve a look that says freshly grown and not freshly sewn you’ll need to get some practice in. Blending is all about smoothing the transition between your hair and your extensions, making it look as natural as possible. It’s really easy once you know how but to get you going we’ve put together our top tips for the best result every time. This is the ultimate guide to blending your Milk + Blush hair extensions like a pro.
FIND YOUR PERFECT MATCH - We really can’t express how important it is that your hair extensions match the shade of your hair perfectly. Finding the right shade is the only way to ensure a completely flawless, natural blend and great end results. Mismatched colours are the biggest giveaway and it’s impossible to get that killer seamless blend without getting this right. Here at Milk + Blush we’ve made it super easy for you to find your perfect match on our Shade Matcher page. Here, you can find a range of images of girls in each and every shade we offer so that you can get a really good idea of what to pick. However if you’re still unsure or are stuck between a few, you can email over some photos to our hair technicians who’ll take a look for you - just be sure you take them in natural light, without filters or editing. Every full set comes with a tester weft too which you can use to make sure the shade is just right before committing to opening your set. Our M+B babe Mim has also made a really good video about choosing the right shade of extensions to you, so if you need some more info click here to watch.
CUT IT OUT - If you’re finding it hard to blend your M+B extensions with your particular haircut it’s worth thinking about taking them to a professional for a trim. This is an easy way to personalise your set and get a great match, especially if you have a haircut that’s hard to blend. Another thing to consider is adding layers to your set too, as it’s a really good way of getting them to work perfectly into your own hair. The point where your natural hair ends is normally where it becomes more obvious that you’re wearing extensions so having a few layers to break up the difference is perfect.
BE A CURLY SUE - If you’re really struggling it’s good to know that curled styles are a lot easier to blend with extensions than poker straight looks. The wave of the curl helps to smooth your hair seamlessly around the extensions so you won’t be able to tell where your natural hair ends and your extensions begin.
THINK ABOUT YOUR NATURAL HAIR LENGTH - Yes we’d all love Kim Kardashian’s sassy hip length hair but if you’ve got a pixie crop it’s just not gonna happen. Going for hair that’s much longer than your own will only make it harder to blend, something key to consider when picking the right set for you. We recommend measuring with a tape measure from your ear downwards when making your choice to get the best idea of where the hair will fall. As a general rule if you have hair above shoulder length go for something shorter than 20-22” and for hair past shoulder length you can opt for something longer.
TOGETHER FOREVER - It may sound really obvious but styling your hair together with the wefts will only aid in the blending process. You want your hair to mix seamlessly with the extensions for the most natural finish possible. It also takes so much less time to do it this way so a total win all round.
PESKY ROOTS - If you’ve seen our M+B babe Mim’s YouTube videos this is one of her favourite tips and it’s so good! Lot’s of us have blonde or highlighted hair so darker roots can be a bit of a pain to blend. However you can mimic the root growth of your natural hair by adding touch up spray at the top of your extensions. We recommend the L’Oreal Paris Magic Retouch which comes in several different colours and works really well with our extensions.
ONE CLIP WEFTS - If you’ve got our Classic Set you can use the one clip wefts at the front of your hair to blend any pesky layers. This is often the hardest section to hide but these clips help to build a seam-free, smooth transition between your natural hair and the length of the extensions. It’s especially good if you’re growing out a fringe or your layers are quite chunky.
FIND THE BALANCE - You need to balance the overall thickness of your natural hair, there’s nothing worse than extensions which look too full or thin in comparison. You want it to look as super healthy and perfect as possible so no one knows you’re wearing them. To get the balance right it’s worth playing with different placements and numbers of wefts until you figure out what works best for you. If you have fine hair don’t feel you need to use every single weft in your set, if it’s too much then consider leaving a piece out or changing the placement.
IT’S ALL IN THE PREP - There are a few things you can do while applying your extensions to help get the best blend. To hide the difference in length, pin up the section of hair at the nape of your neck before adding extensions. This will give you a smoother transition and make it look more natural. Then apply some hairspray and tease the root to give your extensions something to hold on to. Having a good base means that your wefts will stay in place and look natural for longer.
These tips are so simple, we have no doubt you’ll be blending like the best in no time. If you need any more advice though you can pop us a question below or on our social media pages and we’ll be happy to help you out.
