Having healthy hair all year round requires a lot of love, care and attention. But do you reaaally know how to give your hair just that? Apart from a hair mask every now and then, are you taking care of your hair as much as you should be? Not sure? Read on to find out our healthy hair hacks and how you should be caring for your tresses…

Healthy Hair Hacks #1

Okay, the first healthy hair hack requires more eating and by that, we mean eating more healthy fats. Healthy fats from avocados, coconuts, nuts, seeds and oily fish are perfect for giving your hair strength from the inside out. If you’ve noticed that your locks are prone to breaking and is weak and lifeless, you may need to get more of these fats into your diet and see if you notice a difference.

Healthy Hair Hacks #2

As well as eating healthy fats it’s also important to infuse your hair with goodness and use them directly on your hair for mounds of moisture and shine. We would definitely recommend using coconut oil as a hair mask every week until you start to feel the benefits. For best results apply one tablespoon of virgin coconut oil all over your locks (add more depending on the length of your hair), leave overnight then wash out in the morning with shampoo and take advantage of your super soft and smooth locks.

Healthy Hair Hacks #3

Now, we’re all guilty of using a little too much heat on our hair as well as being fans of having dye job every month or so. But, by doing this we’re stripping our hair of natural oils and causing breakage whilst leaving it dull, dry and brittle, gah! So, to help your hair recover look for a shampoo and conditioner that is free from sulphates and other harsh chemicals. Also make sure you avoid styling your hair with heated styling tools too often and when you do - be sure to use a good heat protectant prior to styling to prevent damage.

Healthy Hair Hacks #4

Okay, we’re back to the food. This time, oats! Yup, oats contain Silica - a trace mineral which is very important for strengthening your hair. The silica works to build healthy and strong connective tissues and is responsible for long, thick and healthy locks. If you do not have enough silica in your system you may find that your hair is weak, fine and brittle. If you’re not a fan of oats, millet, barley, asparagus, spinach and rye all contain silica so that you can still get your fix.

Healthy Hair Hacks #5

Moving on to another aspect of hair care that we are all guilty of, washing your hair too often! If you wash your hair every day this can actually work to remove natural oils from your hair which will in turn leave it looking dull and feeling dry. To combat this, it’s time to ‘train’ your hair to regulate its natural oils by stretching out the length of time between washes. Twice a week is more than enough days to wash your hair, plus you can always use a little dry shampoo on the roots between washes to prolong the time in between each wash.

Healthy Hair Hacks #6

Now, let’s talk about trimming your hair - which you should be getting every 12 weeks btw! But, if you have super long hair you probably dread having your hair trimmed because it’s never a trim, it’s more like 6 inches at a time, right? We get you. But if that’s how you feel, maybe it’s time to find a hairdresser who you trust to give you your desired look and who listens when you let them know that you want as little off as possible. Another tip is to mention ‘dusting’ your hair to your hairdresser, this limits the amount that is cuy of the ends and focuses of on the split ends on the length of your hair for an impressive finish.

Healthy Hair Hacks #7

For healthy, strong, soft hair it’s important to make sure that you are getting an adequate amount of daily protein. Amino acids form to create proteins which in turn are the basic building blocks of our cells and tissue. Source of protein include lean meats, yoghurt, fish, nuts, seed and beans so make sure you’re infusing your body with some much needed protein.

Healthy Hair Hacks #8

Last but not least, you need to make sure that your scalp is as healthy as ever to ensure that your hair stays healthy, too! One of our favourites DIY hair hacks to help maintain a healthy scalp is to mix a teaspoon of sugar with shampoo and cleanse your hair as normal. The sugar works to break away product build up whilst exfoliating your scalp for a fresh finish. If you’re not keen on DIY you can simply use a cleansing or clarifying shampoo and conditioner which will also help to remove product buildup which may be clogging up your scalp.

And there you have it, 8 Healthy Hair Hacks to take note of so that you can give your hair the TLC that it deserves.

Do you have any other hair hacks that you live by to keep your hair healthy? : )
