First things first, did you know that shampoos with the surfactants (detergents) sodium laureth sulfate or sodium lauryl sulfate (both SLS for short) may be super bubbly but, they're also overly drying on the scalp. The shampoos can work to cause redness and irritation when they’re not formulate alongside certain ingredients that may actually neutralise the irritation. If you suffer from a red and itchy scalp, make sure one of the first things you do to soothe your scalp is simply switch to an SLS-free shampoo.

Another trick that we live by for a healthy scalp is to always finish your shampoo and conditioning session with a cool water rinse. Be sure to rinse your hair until all the product has gone until your hair is literally, squeaky clean.

Now, it’s time to take note of the hair care products that you are using. Be sure to keep an eye out for silicones which you will find in a lot of smoothing and straightening shampoos, conditioner and serums. Check the ingredient list for any words ending with methicone and avoid where possible.

Moving on to much needed moisture for your scalp. It’s always a good decision to invest in regular moisturising masks or oil treatments for your hair and scalp. Treat your scalp just like you would the skin on the rest of your body. A tight feeling can be sure to a lack of moisture and oils both in your diet and applied topically.

Finally, if you have tried all of the above and your scalp is still flakey - it is more than likely that you have dandruff. This means that your scalp is over-producing new skin cells and shedding an excess of old ones. So, if you don’t regularly brush your hair and scalp, try doing this daily as this will aid the shedding of skin cells which in most cases, will improve the situation.
