Fancy heading to the salon for your long awaited fresh new haircut of 2017 but feeling a little anxious about your time in the salon chair? Yup, a new haircut may fill you with excitement but, sometimes when discussing your new style with your hairdresser do you think to yourself, ‘seriously, what do they mean!? I’m lost!’. If so, we’re here to clear up any confusion and translate some must know hairstyling terms to put your mind at ease :)...
MUST KNOW HAIRSTYLING TERMS #1
So you’ve been swooning over bouncy, voluminous hair for a while know and you just neeeed and like, have to have it. To a hairdresser this is simply known as texturizing, yup - that’s all you need to say to them! In haircutting terms this means giving a blunt hairstyle different lengths (layering) so there is plenty of movement in the hair which will help create more bounce and volume when styled. Simple!
MUST KNOW HAIRSTYLING TERMS #2
For those of you who hate going to the hairdressers out of sheer fear you’re going to walk out with no hair left, then this one is for you. Let us introduce, dusting! Yep, dusting! This is when the most minimal amount of hair is cut, so the slightest trim for those who are trying to grow out their hair whilst keeping it super healthy or for those who hate having their haircut but know it’s a must for stronger hair. Either way, dusting is a gem in the midst of hairstyling terms.
MUST KNOW HAIRSTYLING TERMS #3
Next up, we have the blunt cut - you probably know this one but just in case. This is a haircut that is all one length and can be both short and long, it also helps thin/fine hair appear fuller plus it’s super on trend at the moment and we are forever loving it. Need we say more!?
MUST KNOW HAIRSTYLING TERMS #4
Moving on to the two dreaded words that you never want to hear from your hairstylists mouth - chemical cut. This means that your hair has been so over processed that it breaks and looks as though you’ve had a haircut eeeek. *covers eyes* Bleach can be super damaging to your locks so remember to give your hair breaks and use a toner instead, too! Remember, be kind to those tresses, gals.
MUST KNOW HAIRSTYLING TERMS #5
If you are pining for soft, loose waves be sure to mutter the words ‘Gisele Waves’ to your hairstylist. They’ll get what you mean in an instant like, they just know (ya know?!) and understand that this hairstyle is more about movement rather than volume. Perfection! : )
MUST KNOW HAIRSTYLING TERMS #6
If you want your locks to look super layered and ‘piecey’ be sure to ask your hairdresser for a ‘point cut’. This is when scissors are used to cut hair vertically instead of horizontally. Leaving you with a much softer, natural finish. This cut is perfect for those with super thick hair who want their hair thinned out a little too. We love this cut, it can work for most hairtypes which is ah-mazing.
MUST KNOW HAIRSTYLING TERMS #7
Ever wondered what your hairdresser meant by a graduated cut? Like, what are they even talking about!? Well, this is a build of weight, 45 degrees from the head shape. This hairstyling technique can be done in many different ways for example you are able to frame your face using this technique, you can have a stacked/angled bob or even super cute side swept bangs. This technique gives ultimate movement and structure to your haircut for a flawless finish.
MUST KNOW HAIRSTYLING TERMS #8
Last but not least, if you are looking for a nonconventional, unique hair cut - think Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and Rihanna's undercut (there are soooo many others to chose from, too!). This hair cut will ensure hair shapes will be choppy, asymmetrical and/or short cut/ shaved and long on top. If you’re unsure of how to describe exactly how you’d like your hair to look, simply show your hairstylist a trusty picture - perfect for when words aren’t enough.
We hope these must know hairstyling terms come in super useful and put your mind at ease on your next visit to the hair salon.
