Have you tried literally every hair treatment out there but *still* can’t seem to revive your broken/frizzy/dry hair? If so, then maybe (just maybe!) it’s time to start playing some damage control and saying farewell to those everyday bad hairstyling habits you have become so fond of...
Bad Hairstyling Habits #1
First things first, let’s get to grips with not washing your hair enough. Your hairstylist is probably telling you to wash your tresses less for healthier, shinier hair. Which in some aspects is totally right - we mean, don’t go washing your hair every day as this will strip your hair of it’s natural oils. But, don’t get too comfortable with your dry shampoo either. Product buildup attracts dirt and weighs down your hair which works to leave it dull and weak. All you need to do is make sure that you are washing your hair 2-3 times a week as this will help take away that product buildup and excess oil that is clinging on to your tresses. Also, be sure to use a clarifying shampoo once a month as this helps to get rid of the grease whilst also leaving your hair primed to soak up the smoothing ingredients in your conditioner, too. It’s a win, win situation.

Next, brushing your hair when it is it. This is a biiiig no, no from us. Your hair is as it’s weakest and most elastic state when it is wet. This means that the tight pull of a brush - especially a natural-bristle brush can overstretch the hair shaft which will lead to dreaded breakage. Instead of brushing your hair straight out of the shower, use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to work through any knots whilst your hair is coated with conditioner in the shower. Your hair will thank you for the gentle touch, trust us.
Bad Hairstyling Habits #3
Now let’s move on to using the wrong hair brush. Like, your hair brush is a major tool in your hair care equipment -you use it every day so why not make sure that you’re using the right one? Natural-bristle brushes are great for grabbing super thick, slightly damp hair and smoothing it out during a blowout. But using these bristle on fine or damaged hair creates way too much tension for the hair to cope with. Instead, vented brushes are a gentler option as their rubble-tipped bristles glide through fine hair. Our favourite brush to use on fine hair has got to be the wet brush - this is is the kindest thing to thin/fine locks.
Top Tip: Check the comb teeth for seams or roughness (there shouldn't be any) and run your brush along the inside of your arm. If there are any scratches, say farewell to your brush. If it harms your skin, it's going to harm your hair, too. Got it?! Good! : )
Bad Hairstyling Habits #4
We think it’s time to talk about turning up the heat! As we all know - heat damages your hair. We're not saying to cut it out completely - all we’re saying is to keep an eye on temperatures. For example, if your straighteners have a heat dial, go for a lower heat setting than usual and always use a good heat protector. Don’t just think of your hair straighteners and curling tongs though - remember, your hair dryer gets hot too. If your hair dryer hurts your scalp, it’s way too hot for your hair. Try setting it on a medium heat instead and you’ll soon notice the difference in the condition of your tresses.
Bad Hairstyling Habits #5
Finally, let’s address dyeing your hair waaaay too much. One of the major bad hairstyling habits you can kick is dyeing your hair more often than needs be. Upkeeping dyed hair can take a major toll on the healthiness of your tresses. Try and leave it as long as possible until your next dye job and use a coloured hair masque inbetween hair dyes if you can. We cannot get enough of the Maria Nila Colour Refresh Toning Shampoo which comes in an array of blonde, brunette and pastel shades which you can use to refresh your shade in between dyeing your hair. The colour refreshment lasts up to 10 washes so it is the perfect product to pro-long your next visit to the salon. Plus it is super gentle on your tresses, too. Need we go on?! : )
What bad hairstyling habits are you gonna give the boot, gals? : )
