If you have naturally voluminous locks to control, you may feel like you have drawn the short straw. But, with our tips and tricks for how to manage thick frizzy hair, you’ll soon fall in love with your tresses again.

You may not have been blessed with ‘easy to style’ locks that can be whipped into almost any hairstyle without the need of a handful of haircare products, and it may take you longer than your friends to get ready - but hey, that’s no reason not to love your naturally thick hair. Just take a look at the likes of Solange Knowles and Juno Temple who are flying the flag for thick, curly manes and are teaching fellow curly haired sisters to embrace their thick hair, oto.

But, if you still can’t seem to love your coarse locks, we’ve gathered a few helpful tips for how to manage thick, frizzy hair. Simply read on to find out how to fall in love with your hair all over again...

How To: Wash Thick, Frizzy Hair

Okay, so our first tip for managing thick frizzy hair is to not wash it as often as you usually would. To most people’s surprise, girls with coarse hair can get away with not washing their hair with shampoo for up to two weeks. This is because coarse hair is much drier than finer strands as the natural oils find it harder to navigate their way through the twists and turns of thicker hair strands. Give your hair a break from your beloved shampoo and revel in the fact of not having to wash your hair every.single.day. This doesn’t mean that you can’t get it wet completely, though; instead, wet it and condition the ends only- this will help tie you through until your next shampoo.

Alternatively, if the thought of not washing your hair is a major no-go, why not try the co-washing method? Originally designed for curly hair, this method of washing your hair with conditioner instead of shampoo aims to re-hydrate and moisturise dry, coarse hair and get rid of frizz (perfect for your hair type). We recommend using silicone-free conditioners as this substance is hard to wash out and can lead to product built up and greasy locks to show for it. Conditioners from the Tigi Catwalk Curlesque range which are specifically designed for curly hair, and ones from the Tigi S Factor are our go to products when co-washing.

When it is time to shampoo (eventually) - we recommend treating your locks to a hair oil instead. Hair oils are much more natural and kinder to your hair as they serve to manage thick, frizzy hair and replenish it with plenty of nutrients to survive off for the next ten days. The Osmo Berber Oil Shampoo is a luxurious blend of nutrients and hydrating properties, which combines extracts of argan oil with the benefits of a normal shampoo, too.

How To: Style Thick, Frizzy Hair

When it comes to styling thick, frizzy hair, there’s no denying that it takes longer to style than finer tresses - and that’s without the effort put in to make sure that it stays under control for the rest of the day, too. To manage thick frizzy hair, the answer is to prep your hair before styling as this will cut down on drying time and spare you a few more hours kip in the morning (we know you’re all ears, now!). Again, oils are great to use on coarse hair as it relaxes the hair strands without them becoming rigid, whilst making them much more manageable to style. Using a blow dry balm like the Tigi Catwalk Sleek Mystique Blow Out Balm, also helps to smooth down frizzy locks before blow drying your tresses, too.

The trick to manage thick, frizzy hair is to use techniques and products which are going to stop your hair from growing wider rather than longer. Before blow drying your hair, part your tresses into three sections on each side, grab the roots and blow dry only the top fourth of your hair, leaving the rest of your tresses wet. Then you need to roughly comb your hands through the rest of your hair and scrunch and twist the ends with a serum, like the Tigi S Factor Smoothing Serum, to stretch the hair downwards.

With these tips and tricks on how to manage thick frizzy hair, hopefully you’ll start to love your voluminous locks and that styling them will become way easier for you.
